When playing C9 we place our index finger on the second fret of the C string. Next, we put the middle finger on the third fret of the G string and then the ring finger on the third fret of the A string. As long as the top finger joints are kept perpendicular you shouldn’t have any worries about muting adjacent strings. You want to be sure the open C is playing in the middle as that is very important to the chord.
